Optometrists should be aware of the symptom of palinopsia to enable them to recognize the phenomenon and minimize the chance of misdiagnosis. Learning the physiologic mechanisms behind this uncommon disorder can help the astute clinician correctly identify its cause. While palinopsia itself is not a disease, it is always indicative of disease, and the symptom of palinopsia may be indicative of a serious underlying systemic dysfunction that would warrant treatment. In addition, identifying the symptoms of palinopsia can put patients at ease in regard to their often disturbing visual symptoms. This course will teach the fundamental signs, symptoms, and etiology of palinopsia and give optometrists the tools to manage patients with the disorder.
