This is a photograph of new vessel growth (corneal vascularization) secondary to contact lens wear. It is painless, however it does indicate that the front of the eye (cornea) is in need of more oxygen. This can result from long term contact lens wear especially in continuous or extended wear (EW) of contact lenses. Because it is painless, regular eye examinations allow us to evalute this and many other contact lens induced complications. We recommend that contact lens wearers receive annual primary eye and contact lens evaluations. For soft contact lens wearers we recommend an office visit every 6 months to evaluate the contact lenses and corneal health (more frequently for EW lens wearers and less frequently for rigid gas permeable lens wearers). Many of the contact lens induced complications as well as many eye and health diseases are painless yet have long term or irreparable effects. For this reason it is important to seek regular eye care.
