Dr. Sunny Sanders received a Doctor of Optometry degree in 1978 from the Illinois College of Optometry (ICO). She then completed a residency in Optometric Education with an emphasis on Cornea and Contact Lenses in 1979. Following her residency, Dr. Sanders joined the faculty at the Illinois College of Optometry serving in administrative and teaching positions. She obtained additional training in the area of Ocular Prosthetics and initiated prosthetic eye education and clinical services into the optometric curriculum. She left Illinois and went into private practice in San Diego, California in 1983. Along with building two successful private practices, she served as an adjunct professor teaching ocular prosthetics at the Southern California College of Optometry from 1987 to 1999.

In 1999 Dr. Sanders retired from private practice and is currently a full time faculty member at the Southern California College of Optometry. She is an Assistant Professor and Assistant Dean for Clinical Affairs. Her primary teaching responsibilities include Contact Lenses, Ocular Prosthetics, Refractive Surgery Co-Management and Practice Management.

Dr. Sanders lectures in the areas of contact lenses, ocular prosthetics and practice acquisition and management. She is a Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry. Her research interests include the effects of contact lenses on corneal stability; refractive surgery effects; and dry eye diagnosis and treatment.
