Dr. Wakabayashi was born in Tokyo, Japan. His father played in a Japanese Professional Baseball team, the Hanshin Tigers. His father is in the Japanese Baseball Hall of Fame in Tokyo and the Sports Hall of Fame in Hawaii. Dr. Wakabayashi was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army in 1955 and the U.S. Air Force in 1961, after serving in the 6004th Air Intelligence Service Squadron, stationed in Japan. He attended the University of Hawaii in Honolulu and Sophia University in Tokyo and received his Doctor of Optometry degree from the Southern California College of Optometry in 1970. Dr. Wakabayashi practices general optometry in Irvine with an emphasis on complext contact lens care, such as bifocal contact lenses, keratoconus contact lenses, etc. Dr. Wakabayashi is an Assistant Professor at the Southern California College of Optometry (SCCO) and has taught at the College for over 30 years. He has also been involved with a number of clinical research projects with many contact lens manufacturers and pharmaceutical companies. Dr. Wakabayashi is very active with optometric organizations, including Omega Delta and the Asian American Optometric Society. He is also a Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry and has been a director for the Alumni Association of SCCO for over 10 years.
