New VP of Advancement and Marketing Starts
A new Vice President of Advancement and Marketing has started at the Southern California College of Optometry (SCCO). Fullerton resident, Paul A. Stover, M.Ed., began his tenure at the College on July 19. Stover brings more than 15 years of professional experience supporting organizations to achieve fundraising success, ignite innovative programming, optimize budgeting and increase endowment support.
"We are delighted to welcome Paul to SCCO and look forward to working together to increase support and awareness of the College," said SCCO President Kevin L. Alexander, O.D., Ph.D. "It's an exciting time for the College as we launch a new strategic plan that requires the marketing expertise that Paul brings."
Stover earned his Masters in Education degree from California State University, Fullerton and he holds a Preliminary Administration Credential. After teaching for many years at the secondary and college levels, he began his professional development career. Among his experiences, he has held development positions at Claremont Graduate University and served as the Interim Executive Director, Children's Hospital of Orange County (CHOC) Foundation. Immediately prior to joining SCCO, he was the Director of Development, College of Pharmacy, Western University of Health Sciences, Pomona.
Active in professional and community organizations, Stover serves as vice chair/commissioner, Technology Working Group, City of Fullerton; co-chair, Development Track, Council for Advancement and Support of Education; member, Association of Fundraising Professionals; member, Wireless Network Task Force, Orange County Business Council; and member, Orange County Forum. He and his wife, Nancy, reside in Fullerton with their four children.
SCCO Announces Administrative Changes
The Southern California College of Optometry (SCCO), has announced two administrative changes among its directors. The changes include the creation of a new position and the expansion of another.
Bill Heaton, has been named, Special Assistant to the President, following 20 years as SCCO's Vice President of Advancement. His new area of responsibility includes the development of graduate programs at the College.
An alumnus of Amherst College, Heaton has been in the non-profit, fund-raising sector for nearly three decades. He has supervised 27 capital campaigns and has published several articles on fund-raising. Active in both professional and community organizations, Heaton was recognized as the Fund Raising Professional of the Year for Orange County in 1996.
A four-year member of the College's administrative team, Arlene Kaye, has a new title at SCCO – Director of Marketing. The new position expands her marketing and public relations activities beyond her prior assignment as Director of Eye Care Center Marketing.
Kaye, who holds a B.A. degree from Rhode Island College, began her marketing career in 1979. She has worked primarily in administrative positions with retail shopping centers. She has earned two industry accreditation credentials – Certified Marketing Director in 1982 and Senior Certified Marketing in 1990. Kaye has been very active in professional and community organizations in all of the cities in which she has worked.
CE Department Awarded Contract
The Continuing Education Department of the Southern California College of Optometry has been awarded a three-year contract to provide Administrative Services to the American Academy of Optometry (AAO), for Transcript Quality Continuing Education. "This contract is a credit to our College and reflects the outstanding reputation of our Continuing Education Program and the quality of the proposal to the AAO," said Vice President and Dean of Academic Affairs Morris S. Berman, O.D., M.S.
Transcript Quality Continuing Education includes an examination component. The examination is required by several states in order for the continuing education courses to be accepted toward license renewal. The contract covers each of the next three annual meetings of the AAO.
Glaucoma Regulations for California Optometrists
Regulations to establish the glaucoma certification process have been approved by the California Department of Consumer Affairs (DCA). After they are approved by State and Consumer Services Secretary and Department of Finance, the regulations will be sent to the Office of Administrative Law (OAL), which has 30 days to approve or reject the regulations. If approved, they will take effect immediately. As soon as this occurs, the College will provide information regarding glaucoma courses that will be offered to optometrists to meet the certification requirements.
Alumni Elected to AOA Board of Trustees
Two SCCO Alumni have been elected to the American Optometric Association's (AOA's) Board of Trustees. Class of 1978 Alumnus Ronald L. Hopping, O.D., M.P.H., was elected Vice President and Mitchell T. Munson, O.D., SCCO Class of 1986, was elected Secretary-Treasurer. The election was held at the 113th Annual AOA Congress and 40th Annual American Optometric Student Association Conference: Optometry's Meeting® June 2010.
Dr. Hopping was first elected to the AOA Board of Trustees in June 2005, re-elected in June 2008, and elected Secretary–Treasurer in 2009. Read more…
Prior to his election to the Board, Dr. Munson spent 10 years in the AOA volunteer structure serving on the AOA New Technologies Committee, Statutory Scope Committee and the AOA Political Action Committee where he served as chair from 2003–04. Read more…
