Class of 2012 Begins OD Program
and Enjoys a Welcome BBQ

SCCO President Kevin L. Alexander, O.D., Ph.D., and his wife, Carol L. Alexander, O.D., talk with members of the Class of 2012 at the Welcome Barbecue held on Saturday, August 16 during Orientation Weekend.  The barbecue was hosted by SCCO’s Student Association.


Now working toward their Doctor of Optometry degrees at SCCO are the members of the Class of 2012. The 2008–09 Academic Year began August 18, and with that the 98 members of the Class of 2012 have been welcomed into the SCCO Family.   The Class of 2012 includes 29 men and 69 women.  Sixty-nine students are from California.  Fifteen other states are represented including: Arizona (4), Hawaii (1), Idaho (3), Iowa (1), Kansas (1), Nebraska (1), Nevada (4), New Mexico (2), New York (1), North Dakota (1), South Dakota (1), Utah (2), Virginia (1), Washington (1), and Wyoming (1).  Four students are from Canada.

The mean GPA for the class was 3.35 and the mean OAT score was 340 (85th percentile).  The highest GPA was 4.00 and the lowest was 3.00.  Students earned their degrees from 45 different colleges and universities.  Fifty-four students received their degree from the University of California system.  The number one school represented is UCLA with 15 students.  Second is UC Davis with 11, followed by UC Irvine with 10.  Additional colleges with more than one representative include UC San Diego (7), UC Berkeley (6), UC Riverside (4), Cal State Fullerton (3), Loyola Marymount (2), BYU-Utah (2), and University of Nevada, Reno (2).

SCCO's Class of 2012 includes the daughter of an alumnus, the son of an alumnus and two students who are sons of Pacific University College of Optometry graduates.  There are also twin sisters in the class and the twin brother of a current third-year student.
